It’s a step toward more efficient agentic systems, for sure, but it’s not full autonomy.

The Partner Problem

The OpenAI/Mixpanel breach is a classic case of the weakest link. Enterprise security is only as strong as your most vulnerable partner. Hackers didn’t go after OpenAI’s servers directly; they sent SMS phishing messages to Mixpanel employees and bypassed all of OpenAI’s own defenses. The stolen data—account names, emails, user IDs—is a goldmine for crafting more sophisticated, targeted attacks later. Mixpanel says they notified affected customers, but the real damage is to trust. When you’re a platform as big as OpenAI, your security perimeter extends to every third-party tool with an API key. This incident is a reminder that for big tech, supply chain security now includes your analytics and SaaS vendors, too.
